For My Mother

Dear Yuri,

We have been in lockdown for six weeks now. In this time I have changed jobs and my partner has temporarily lost his. He looks after the kids while I learn my new job via virtual tools.

Friday, 13 March was the last time I saw my mother. All people over the age of 70 have been told to stay home and not to even go to the grocery store. My kids miss their grandmother and I miss talking to her face to face. Videocalls help a bit but it’s not the same as giving your loved one a hug. I am my mother’s only child and I never had a dad.

My oldest child (5 yrs old) misses his friends and grandparents. He recently got a new bike and would love to show it to his grandma especially.

We are all longing for the moment when this all will be over.

I will not take anything for granted once this ends. I will hug my mum every time I see her and tell her how much we love her.

We have been lucky with our government acting so fast and so early. We still don’t know how or when this ends. It feels comforting to hear my mother on the phone, saying ”don’t worry my dear, one day this will be over”

I hope she is right.
