Outside In

Dear Yuri,

Greetings from what we call “the new Sudan” and I must admit, even as an introvert person, I miss the outside world.
Also, Ramadan Kareem to you. I say this while laying in our front yard and gazing at the crescent moon and what I suspect is Venus. I lay in total harmony with the universe trusting that this quarantine will soon be over.

Ramadan this year is different than what we’re used to. It’s very quiet at night whereas this holy month for many is well known for its night life. From communal breakfast in the streets once the sun sets, to boys playing in the streets or even different imams reciting different Quran phrases from nearby Mosques. We’ve even missed celebrating Easter this year.

This lockdown reminds me very much of a month I’ve been dying to forget; June 2019, when we were in total lockdown by force after The Khartoum Massacre and how we didn’t have the time, the energy or the mental capacity to deal with what we’ve witnessed. We’ve collectively worked towards a united goal: Survive and start the rebuild of our beloved sudan. Less than a year later, we’re locked down yet again by force, with one goal in mind: Survive and start the rebuild of our beloved Sudan, and a better world

Together, we shall survive, we shall prosper and the best is yet to come. So, dearest Yuri, Let’s enjoy this time to reconnect with family members whom we haven’t seen in ages and estranged friends.

Love from the green land of Sudan.
