Response

Dear Yuri,

It’s day 26 of lockdown in London and I haven’t had much time to look out of any windows. Or more my panicked, hyper-vigilant, first-responder brain tells me I can’t stop to look. I’m not responding to the sick. I’m not responding to the dying. I’m barely responding to myself. I’m responding to the four other humans and one canine in my household. Feed them, clean them, watch them, walk them, stop them. And then the mess that accumulates. Sweep it, wipe it, move it, hang it, stop it. Today I’ve escaped the relentless privilege of domestic servitude to look out of a different window. I saw a huge fox staring at a cat. They were both silent, content and still. And for a moment so was I.
