Waking Up To the World

Dear Yuri,

Today is the first day I really noticed the world outside. The sun has caught the rosebush in the front garden and illuminated the pink blooms; framed by the glazed leaves. Natural beauty has finally torn my gaze from the television that sits three feet from the window. My mind has started to ponder things again: has superficiality finally overtaken creativity? Do I feel anymore? It wasn’t always like this.

But then, in bucolic surroundings, the gentle sound of birdsong and leaves rustling make dark thoughts creep quicker, when not in competition with the screams of sirens and city hubbub. How can somewhere so tranquil seem more threatening than twitching streets, hot with monotony and pent-up anarchy?

The blooms have calmed existential fears and the clean sky quells the anxiety which has taken residence since this pandemic began.

Gulls shriek their laughter overheard, and I join in.
